Over the years I have served on many non-profit boards as a Board of Director and as I gain experience as an officer. I do this because I like to help organization do their best. Recently I saw posts on the internet about the USDBF and how their officers were not handling a situation correctly. […]

Team selection is always very difficult and you are never going to please everyone, but at least in a dragon boat team you get more chances to be selected than in other sports due to the large team size. Is there a magic formulae?![]()
It all needs to start with what the Club is aiming to do for the year. This may be just taking part in all regattas for fun and exercise or it might be you want to win at all costs. There is always a fine balance between keeping everyone in the club happy and putting out the strongest team that is going to win. Once a Coach knows the focus for the year or an event then crew selection becomes 'slightly’ easier.![]()
Crew selection could be based on a number of criteria:
• Fastest paddle machine or 01 times
• Strongest with lifting weights
• Ability to paddle in time with the rest of the crew
• Technique ability
• Training attendance
• Weight to balance the boat
• Who are the better team players
• Pulling names out of a hat!![]()
As paddlers we should know our own individual strengths and weaknesses in terms of physical strength, fitness, weight and age. We don’t always get in life what we want! The Coach is trying to get a balanced boat which has good timing and rhythm; all things which lead to good boat speed. This may mean we don’t get the side we want to paddle on, we don’t get the seat we want to sit on, but personally I would rather be in a team than sitting on the side line!
